Growth Now Movement with Justin Schenck
Description
Why do some of our best ideas never become reality?
We have the vision. We have the ambition. We may even have the skills.
But somehow, the idea stays in our head instead of turning into results.
In this episode of The Growth Now Movement, I sit down with Brian to unpack one of the biggest challenges facing entrepreneurs, leaders, and high achievers: the gap between potential and execution.
Brian has spent years thinking about this problem because he's lived it himself.
He talks openly about what it was like to carry an identity of having "uncommon potential" while simultaneously feeling the pressure to prove it. That pursuit of external validation eventually pushed him toward an unsustainable version of ambition—one driven by hustle, achievement, and the need to constantly demonstrate that he was capable.
But eventually, something had to change.
We talk about the shift from extrinsic validation to healthier, more grounded ambition, including a pivotal moment before Brian launched his Burpees for Vets campaign—a project that ultimately raised more than $1 million.
That experience became part of a much bigger lesson:
Potential doesn't create results. Follow-through does.
Brian also completely reframes the way we think about productivity.
Instead of simply asking how much you can accomplish, he defines productivity as:
Quality × Quantity.
It's not just about doing more. It's about making sure the work you're doing actually matters—and then measuring, reflecting, and improving how you execute.
We get into the practical systems Brian uses to make that happen, including dynamic time blocking, schedule-first planning, daily check-ins, end-of-day reviews, and a Todoist-based task system.
He also shares a simple but powerful definition of accountability:
"Keeping track."
Rather than viewing accountability as someone constantly checking up on you, Brian believes you need a system that makes your commitments visible so you can actually see whether you're doing what you said you were going to do.
We also unpack his environment + effort framework for follow-through and why changing your environment can sometimes be more powerful than simply trying harder.
Brian shares how a pre-commitment with a mentor helped him finally finish his book draft—proof that sometimes the best productivity strategy isn't more motivation.
It's creating consequences and structures that make follow-through easier.
And toward the end of the conversation, Brian gets deeply personal about his recent journey into Christian faith and how finding faith has changed the way he thinks about ambition, identity, purpose, and what success actually means.
If you've ever felt like you're capable of more but struggle to consistently execute, this episode will give you a different way to think about productivity, accountability, discipline, and personal growth.
